Project Description

Gray Roscoe Barker (1925-1984)
A short biography of Gray Barker

Men In Black
Gray Barker is credited as being the primary popularizer of the Men In Black as an element in UFO mythology. In his book They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers (1956) Barker recounts UFO researcher and publisher Alfred K. Bender's 1953 encounter with three men dressed in black suits who unfolded the mystery of UFOs to him. They then threatened to place him in prison if he disclosed the secret.

Gray Barker: My Friend, the Myth-Maker
John Sherwood details his involvement with Barker in producing UFO "myths." "Claims" that Barker was a hoaxster and myth maker. However, it is clear that someone/something has intimidated Sherwood into recanting his belief in UFOs.

Gray Barker's Book of Bunk: Mothman, Saucers, and MIB
Sherwood again attempts to debunk Barker.

The Hollow Earth Chapter 7.1: The Subterranean Origin of the Flying Saucers
Flying Saucers come from inside the Earth, not other planets. Barker accepted this hypothesis over the belief that UFOs come from outer space.

The Legend of Mothman
Gray Barker investigated the Mothman episodes which began in November 1966 around Point Pleasant, West Virginia. The Mothman episodes culminated on December 15, 1967 when the Silver Bridge which crosses the Ohio river collapsed and killed 46 people. Gray Barker based his fictional book The Silver Bridge (1970) on the Mothman sightings. UFO and paranormal researcher John A. Keel also investigated the Mothman phenomena and wrote the bookThe Mothman Prophecies (1975). The film The Mothman Prophecies (2002) starring Richard Gere and Laura Linney is loosely based on Keel's and Barker's books.

Flatwoods Monster
Gray Barker also investigated the Flatwoods monster which was seen in Flatwoods, West Virginia in 1952. This investigation began Barker's interest in UFOs.
