Yes. SHARE was to have been the focus of the thesis I decided not to write. Contact me off-list and I'll try to answer any questions you have, although I bet that there are some old-time SHARE folks on this list who know the answers better than I do. Short answer: founded in 1955 by 701/704 users, mostly in the Aerospace sector in Southern California. It was intended as a users' group for IBM scientific (as opposed to business systems, which had GUIDE as their users' group) systems. Grew by Meeting #9 in 1957 into its current biannual form (the first two years were busy), and the list of members looked like a Who's Who of big American high-tech firms. The ongoing tensions between IBM and SHARE are pretty fascinating. One of the things I was interested in looking at, although I never got much of anywhere with it, was looking at how IBM got power away from SHARE back into its own hands with regard to the design of system software for the 360.
SHARE still exists and still meets twice a year. I think it is the oldest existing users' group.
