If you're trying to read a wide variety of floppies, keep an Apple-II and an Amiga around. Both of them did format decoding in software, and so can read or write any NRZ data stream and convert it into bits and bytes. The Apple, of course, will become your locksmith for 5.25" disks, and the Amiga for 3.5".
