I don't know if the LA Times piece would still be available, but they did an extensive one on the origins of the name, since it's puzzled everyone. It was named by a prospector, I recall, but nothing else is certain. Possibly, it was his name. The word in Wizard of Oz sounds a lot like it was borrowed from a real word, "syzygy," that described three astronomical bodies in a straight line, as the sun, moon and earth during a lunar eclipse.
