>Does anyone know where the word Zzyzx came from? I have seen it numerous times, both in the computer world and in the real world. I used to assume it came from the old Adventure came, where (if I recall correctly) it was a magic word used to teleport, or something like that. But driving up highway 51 toward Las Vegas last weekend, I saw a sign for "Zzyzx Road--2 miles."

I don't know where the word Zzyzx comes from, but maybe one of these references can help you. Maybe a call to your local public library would prove fruitful?

(Zzyzx, by the way, crashes some online dictionaries.)

Zzyzx - supplier of SPARC-based systems and UNIX workstation peripherals including disk, tape, RAID, optical, software, and system enhancements. www.zzyzx.com
Their page claims they got the name from the road you mentioned. It is easily possible that many of the computer world uses stem from this source.

ZZyZX Studio Web Animation & Broadcasting ZZyZX Studio; http://www.pacific.net/~zzyzx

There are a whole bunch of people out there who are using Zzyzx as an e-mail name. Any search of usenet on Altavista or Dejanews will hook you up with them.

The center for Desert Studies at Zzyzx, Unofficial homepage is: http://www.nscee.edu/unlv/Colleges/College_of_Science_and_Math/Biology/Light on/zzyzx.htm
But it was under construction and the link telling where the name comes from was inactive. It also links to the official page.

Best of all, there was an article on Zzyzx: JOHN McKINNEY, Hiking: Mojave Desert; Getting Sidetracked Into the Quirky; Home Edition, Los Angeles Times, 2 Feb 1997.

Which had a short history of the Cavalry post/Road/Resort/town. I will forward the article clipping directly to your e-mail, rather than post it here considering its length. But still no word origin data.

Oh, and lastly;
Zzyzx's Hard Rock watches. (The watch face is nestled in a motorcycle or guitar.)

"Lord Tarkin. We've analyzed their attack. We've sent someone up with a man-hole cover for that vent."
- scenes we'd really like to see redone.
