Community Memory: Discussion List on the History of Cyberspace ______________________________________________________________________
Hello all -- I'm new to the list, but was browsing through some older posts and noticed a thread about the first search engine. It seems as if this thread abruptly ended without coming to any conclusions (last post was somewhere around February).
Well, I'm writing a book on search engines and I decided to open the book up with a history of searching on the web. I have scoured the internet for historical information, and have come up with a fairly complete picture through the release of Lycos.
I am amazed at the fact that there is no single page on the web that contains all of this information. Therefore, as a service to the net community, I am creating a page with the current text of the first chapter. (I'd post it here, but it's pretty long at the moment) Here's the URL
http://gsd.mit.edu/~history/search/engine/history.html
This is an unfinished document -- I'll be finishing it over the next few weeks. I'd greatly appreciate it if members from this list could help me fill in the blanks. I'm especially interested in anecdotes and company politics. When complete I hope that it will serve as a valuable resource for future historians.
Thanks!
Wes Sonnenreich
