Leslie Harris has a good introduction to MUDs & MOOs, which if I remember correctly, also includes a history. The URL I have for it is as follows:

And an essay by Pavel Curtis (of LAMBDA fame), "Mudding: Social Phenomena in Text-Based Virtual Reality," is available (at least it was last year) at this URL:
