A good start would be to read these three books:
_Zap!_, by Scott Cohen - details the early history of Atari _Game Over_, by David Sheff - the story of Nintendo _Phoenix_, by Leonard Herman - a chronological history of home videogames
There are lots of others, but given your deadline those three should be enough to get you started :)
