MAD was loosely derived from Algol 58. It was created at Michigan by Galler, Arden, and Graham on the IBM 7090. 6.41, the first programming course I took at MIT in 1961, used FORTRAN on the 7090 under FMS; later courses used MAD, which compiled much faster.
