This is in addition to the excellent System R reunion transcript on the web, which has been previously mentioned in this list. I'm particularly interested in government funding (or lack thereof), and how people transferred knowledge and code from university-based research to private companies.

In the late 70's I designed (with Joaquin Miller) one of the first IBM PC (also ran on Unix) relational databases for the Community Memory Project. It was to be the data storage mechanism for next version of Community Memory. It got commercialized by the Pacific Software Manufacturing Company under the name Sequitur.
It was loosely based on IBM s experimental system Query-By-Example and work of mine on functional model databases. It had a bunch of interesting features including updating through a join, multivalued columns, and support for textual data. The initial funding came from gifts to the project. After it was licensed to Pacific Software work was continued using funds from private investors. No government money was involved.
