Community Memory: Discussion List on the History of Cyberspace ______________________________________________________________________

I have a lot of popinters and info on this since I was personally involved. I need to get it down in an organized way.

The first email was probably over ARPANET, but that was an "add-on" feature since ARPANET was designed for and implemented to support real computer to computer interactions and transfers such as file transfers. The first public demo of email was probably at the First International Conference on Computer Communications (ICCC72) at the Mayflower Hotel Washington, DC, October, 1972.

The first system designed specifically for email was probably the EIES (Electronic Information Exchange System) by Murray Turoff at the New Jersey Institute of Technology in the late 70s. There was also a system in Canada that may have been operational before EIES.

More later if I can find the time to do it.
