Folks, I just wanted to let you know that I have placed both of J.C.R. Licklider's crucial papers, _Man Computer Symbiosis_ (1960) and _The Computer As a Communications Device_ (1968, co-authored with Robert Taylor), on-line, in Adobe PDF format. This document came to me via Robert Taylor, who now works at Digital Equipment Corporation. These papers are availabe for non-commercial use only, courtesy of DEC. I do not know of any other on-line location other than this one.
The URL is:
http://memex.org/licklider.html
>From this page there are also links to two on-line books with excellent
chapters on who Licklider was, and his role in setting the funding priorities which led to both the Internet, and Douglas Engelbart's work on creating first "mouse," "windows" and "hypertext." I also found a photo of him as well.
best,
db
PS I just completed an interview with Douglas Engelbart, and a transcript will be placed on-line within the next few days. When it is available I will let you know.
