Community Memory: Discussion List on the History of Cyberspace ______________________________________________________________________

>There has been discussion on another list about the earliest appearances of pornography in CMC - this would include anything from ascii-outline images on.
It probably depends on one's definition of pornography as well.
Just to put a stake in the ground, the earliest example that I have first-hand knowledge of is "Edith", a simple 1-card program and several hundred data cards for the 1401. I first saw this ca. 1964, but I don't believe it was new then.
Edith was a young woman seated on a stool, depicted in a printer image on the 1401's line printer. The deck was intended to be run through the machine 3 times, with different switch settings each time. (The switches were physical switches on the machine console, and could be interrograted by the program.) On each pass, the program printed only those cards which were marked for that pass; many cards were common to 2 or 3 of the passes.
On the first pass, Edith appeared fully clad. On the second pass, Edith appeared wearing only a bra and panties. And on the third pass, she appeared holding a sign covering much of her body which said something like "No matter what your IBM salesman says, you can't do everything with a 1401."
If anyone has a working card reader, I think I still have the deck somewhere.
