Various angles to one question:
What was the original purpose of the e-mail signature? When and where was it first implemented and why?
I realize that since e-mail has penetrated the mainstream, so has the sig function. It has stimulated a variety of manifestations from simple return addresses to 50-line ASCII art. What was it for in the first place?
