For those who want to think about AI in an intelligent way, I can think of no better place to start than Allen Newell's "Intellectual Issues in the History of Artificial Intelligence", published in _The Study of Information: Interdisciplinary Messages_, ed. Fritz Machlup and Una Mansfeld (New York: Wiley, 1983).
