Community Memory: Discussion List on the History of Cyberspace ______________________________________________________________________

The discussion of what is intelligence is a fundamental conversation which dates to the origin of digital computers, which from the beginning were associated by many as a primitive form of the brain. This is a rich lode of history for us to explore, and given the focus of this list, it is best that posts attempt to make reference to the evolution of AI as a context for the far-ranging questions of defining intelligence. I am particularily curious about how our image of AI has changed after the creation of specific technologies -- for instance the mainframe supported an image of the omniscent brain, best exemplefied by HAL in 2001. Networks of personal computers were essential for the creation of a new AI idea -- "artificial life." I have always wondered what the origins of the artificial life idea are, and how it is related to the change in computer architecture and software. Did the microprocessor "spawn," so to speak, artificial life as a metaphor and framework for computer science?

Has anyone on the list worked in AI research at some point? If so, your input would be much appreciated.

best,
db
