I hope the future is not off-topic. When I present my spiel to our CS sophomores for my History of Calculating class, I submit the best way to gain any anticipation of future trends is to learn about the past.

To make this point, I bring in an old paperback mystery, and ask, "Who wants to read a book?" After selecting a victim, I extract four pages (which correspond to their years in school; last month, pages 95-96-97-98) and ask them to hypothesize a conclusion. Then I suggest they might be better off if they could read the beginning of the book.

Like, take my history class to learn the non-linear events which put us in our current status. Seems to make an impression. Of course, few engineers volunteer for a course which requires a written paper, but that keeps the class to a fun size.
