I recently requested and/or received copies of the FBI Files on the following notables in computing or related fields:
Grace Murray Hopper (one of the first programmers) John Von Neumann (mathematician)
Harold Sweatt (founder of Honeywell)
Mark C. Honeywell (founder of Honeywell)
Thomas J. Watson, Jr. (IBM chairman)
Robert Norton Noyce (electronics)
Chester Carlson (Xerox inventor)
Lee DeForest (vacuum tube inventor)
Howard Hathaway Aiken (Mark I)
James W. Bryce (IBM inventor) (no confirmation for file yet)
Vannevar Bush (OSRD in WW2)
William Shockley (transistor inventor)
Norbert Weiner (cybernetics inventor)
Problem is, I'm looking for suggestions for other people I should ask for. Ideas? Please send me [on private e-mail] ideas on which deceased Americans for which their FBI files might tell us more about early computing. Don't worry if they have files--they do, trust me. I've found that 85% of notables do. The people must be deceased. I promise to publish my results in some form eventually.
If you want to get copies of any of these files, you can write to the FBI at Freedom of Information Act Unit, Records Resources Division, Federal Bureau of Investigation, 9th & Pennsylvania Avenue N.W., Washington, DC 20535. You'll need date of birth and proof of death like a newspaper obituary. It does take a while; not for the impatient.
