Upon entering my bedroom, I see my bed first. It seems to be the focus of the room. But I'll not start there, I'll start somewhere that allows me to better define the boundaries of my space--the walls, floor, and ceiling. The walls and molding are all painted white. If I didn’t know better, I’d say it was institutional white. How odd would that be? In any case, the walls are painted with a flat paint. More than likely, the painting was done by a spray-gun; this would explain the thin layer of fine white powder I found all over our walls when my husband and I moved in.
RIGHT
The wall to my right is solid; it is the side of the bedroom that butts up against the neighbors’ townhouse. There are three posters spaced somewhat erratically on this wall. To the far left of the wall is a small bench that collects gym bags and things of this sort. Next is my night stand that matches my bedroom set. The Bed follows. Although it is centered on the wall, it serves as the center-of-attention or main focus of the room. Lastly, a chest of drawers is positioned in the little space left on the wall.
FRONT
The wall in front of me has two windows with blinds that look out to the front of the townhouse. I open them when it is warm outside and sometimes when it’s a bit chilly. I like the fresh air, especially when I am cleaning the house. Sometimes I’ll put on a pair of sweatpants and a sweatshirt just so I can open the windows.
LEFT
The wall to my left has two doors on it. The closest is to my walk-in-closet and the other to the master bathroom. Positioned neatly between both is the Dresser that matches the chest of drawers and nightstand.
WHERE I AM
The wall I stand against has one door (where I stand) that is on the left side of the room (the side closest to the closet door). The door stays open except at night time when I sleep and when anyone visits the house. At night I feel as though I must close the door so that no one gets in (or maybe so I don’t sleep-walk out…I’m not sure). To the right of the wall is an air intake vent. A caricature of my husband hangs on the wall.
OTHER THINGS
There are things not against the walls. For example there is a television and stand in the far left hand corner (between the master bathroom door and the leftmost window). Part of my Tigger collection is sprawled around the base of the television stand. Somewhat in the middle of the far side of the room stands a Gazelle (the exercise machine, not the animal).
FLOOR
The bedroom is carpeted. It has a neutral Berber. In fact the stuff carpets the whole house. It is quite nice though; it never looks dirty. Sometimes this can be a bad thing. There are times that it is very hard to find things when they drop on the floor. When I look down at the carpet in the doorway, I can see a faint seam. I hope this isn’t a bad sign.
CEILING
The last boundary of my bedroom would be the ceiling. It’s a typical textured ceiling. In the center of the ceiling is a ceiling fan that is white (as long as you don’t look at the dust along each of the five blades…I don’t dust the fan very often because it’s always on) with three lights with frosted glass fixtures.
