Story

The staircase is used by:

  • family and our friends who use the staircase as a means by which to go from one floor to the other and
  • teenagers who like to half sit/half lay up and down the steps, so I find myself weaving in and out of this human maze when I travel the stairs during a party.
  • Two members of our family take time to appreciate and enjoy this part of the house: yours truly and our cat, Poptart. Not only do I take care of the wood finish, I occasionally like to sit on the landing and just take in the house. I especially like sitting on the landing at Christmastime after everyone else has gone to bed. From that vantage point, I lean toward the spindles and enjoy looking down upon our towering Christmas tree which is lit up between the three windows in the downstairs foyer.

Poptart's favorite spot is his throne on the post at the bottom of the staircase railing. There, he will either sit stoically or hunch into a more horizontal repose. Oftentimes, he will carry on a conversation with any family member who happens upon him or he will reach out for an occasional high-five.

Once when he was a kitten, he walked the tightrope of the upstairs railing, lost his balance and fell to the hardwood foyer floor. He lay motionless on the floor for about 30 seconds, then jumped up and loped away--no broken bones or brain damage!
